‘Sweetest person I ever coached’: Coaches, friends remember Weston man killed in mass shooting in Orlando

Anis Jerbi has just one word to describe 19-year-old Timothy Schmidt Jr.: humble.

“He taught me a lesson in humility,” Jerbi said. “Sometimes I’m not, but he showed me the value of it.”

Jerbi, the director of Plantation FC Rush soccer club, had coached Schmidt on and off, and their bond went beyond the field.

“He was the sweetest person I ever coached,” Jerbi shared. “I saw a bright future for him, but God has His own plans for good people.”

Tragically, Schmidt’s life was cut short on Friday. He was one of two people killed in a mass shooting in downtown Orlando, which left eight others injured. The 17-year-old shooter was eventually tackled by officers, though no motive has been released.

“Tim was one of those guys you never had a bad thought about,” recalled his friend Tan Bei. “He was always the life of the party.”

Bei, who went to Cypress Bay High School with Schmidt, said they played soccer and worked out together often. Schmidt even texted Bei on his birthday, and the two had plans to meet up later this year.
