A father is speaking out about the tragic death of his 5-year-old son with autism, who passed away after leaving their home while his mother was taking a nap. The heartbreaking incident unfolded when the young boy, who had wandered away, was found later, leading to his untimely death.
The father, devastated by the loss, is now sharing his story, hoping to raise awareness about the situation and the challenges families face when caring for children with autism. His words reflect both his grief and a deep desire for answers as he processes the unimaginable loss of his son.
Days after the tragic discovery of his 5-year-old son, Joshua James McCoy, whose body was found in the Coos County coastal forest, the boy’s father is demanding answers. The circumstances surrounding Joshua’s death remain shrouded in mystery, as the police investigation is still in its early stages.
On November 9, Joshua disappeared from his mother’s home on Stage Road, located between North Bend and Hauser, while his mother was resting. His absence went unnoticed until it was too late, and after an agonizing search, the young boy’s body was located three days later, approximately two miles from their home. The father, devastated and searching for clarity, is now speaking out, hoping to understand what led to his son’s tragic death.
As of Tuesday, a representative from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office stated that the cause of death for 5-year-old Joshua James McCoy remains undetermined. Authorities have not yet released any details regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing, and the investigation is ongoing as they work to uncover more information.
McCoy, 47, had not seen his son for nearly a year after relocating back to Ohio, his home state. Before moving away, however, he recalls a time when his family led a peaceful and happy life together. McCoy shared that he met his girlfriend, Angela German, while they were both living in Utah. The couple eventually purchased a home and had a child together.
As their lives progressed, German found a job as a nurse at a hospital in Coos Bay, Oregon, which led them to sell their home and move to Coos County. They bought a house situated on a secluded road next to a large pond. While German worked at the hospital, McCoy, who received disability benefits due to his service in the U.S. Air Force, stayed home to care for their son. Their son, who was diagnosed with autism, faced challenges with communication, which McCoy said added complexity to their everyday lives.
At the time of the statement, German was not immediately available for comment.
McCoy had not seen his son since he left Oregon to return to Ohio, and this separation weighs heavily on him. According to McCoy’s brother, Joshua McCoy, the father is overwhelmed with guilt, believing that if he had stayed in Oregon, his son would still be alive. This intense feeling of responsibility for his son’s death has deeply affected him as he struggles with the loss.
Joshua McCoy has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for various expenses related to his nephew’s death. The money will be used to cover transportation and funeral costs, therapy services, hiring a private investigator, daily living expenses, and a tribute or memorial for the young boy.
Amos McCoy shared that he has not been in contact with Angela German, and neither has any other member of his family. He expressed deep regret about his decision to leave. In addition to seeking a clear explanation for his son’s cause of death, he hopes to have the boy’s body transported to Ohio for burial, where he wishes for his son to be laid to rest next to his great-grandparents.
He expressed deep gratitude towards the investigators at the scene, who have been keeping him updated on their findings. He particularly appreciated one investigator who personally called to inform him that his son had been found.
