Joe Biden Slams ICC Arrest Warrants for Israeli Leaders—Calls Them ‘Outrageous

In a sharp rebuke to the International Criminal Court (ICC), US President Joe Biden on Thursday denounced the tribunal’s recent issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, describing the move as “outrageous.” The ICC’s action targets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, alleging war crimes during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Speaking on the matter, President Biden underscored unwavering US support for Israel. “Whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas,” he stated. His remarks reflect a broader US position that consistently defends Israel in the international arena.

Reiterating his administration’s stance, Biden added, “We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security.”

The White House also released a separate statement rejecting the ICC’s actions. A National Security Council spokesperson criticized the tribunal, citing procedural flaws and a rushed approach in issuing the warrants. The statement emphasized that the United States does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, particularly over matters involving nations that are not parties to the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the court.

The controversy comes amid heightened global scrutiny over the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has already drawn polarized reactions from international leaders and institutions. While the ICC prosecutor’s decision has been welcomed by some human rights advocates, it has also triggered strong opposition from Israel and its allies, including the United States.

This episode highlights enduring tensions between the ICC and powerful nations like the US and Israel, which challenge the court’s authority and impartiality in addressing global conflicts.
