Russian President Vladimir Putin praised U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as an “intelligent and experienced politician” capable of addressing complex challenges, but expressed concerns about Trump’s safety following multiple assassination attempts during the election campaign.

In July, Trump narrowly escaped harm when a bullet grazed his ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. In another incident in September, a man was charged with attempted assassination after allegedly positioning himself with a rifle at one of Trump’s Florida golf courses. Speaking to reporters in Kazakhstan after a summit, Putin suggested that U.S.-Russia relations might improve once Trump takes office on January 20, CNN reported.

“As far as I can imagine, the newly elected president is an intelligent and already quite experienced person. I think he will find a solution,” Putin stated.

The Russian leader commended Trump for overcoming significant obstacles, describing the assassination attempts as part of an “absolutely uncivilized” effort to undermine him. Putin added that the attempts on Trump’s life showed the intensity of the challenges he faced and voiced concerns about his continued safety.

Putin also criticized what he called “humiliating and unfounded judicial procedures” aimed at Trump during the campaign. This referred to Trump’s high-profile legal battles, including his conviction in June on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a hush money case, making him the first former U.S. President to be convicted of a felony.
