Could Daylight Saving Time Be Scrapped Under the New Trump Administration? Shocking Statement Revealed
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are considering eliminating Daylight Saving Time.
According to New York Magazine, Musk responded to another account’s poll on whether Daylight Saving Time should be canceled by posting the following tweet on his platform X — formerly Twitter. Musk had written: “Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time changes!” Shortly after, Ramaswamy joined the discussion on X, adding, “It’s inefficient and easy to change.”
The Consistent Time Act 1966 established the United States’ consistent Daylight Saving Time system. Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that have chosen not to change the clocks, while other states, like New York, have recently considered doing so.
During the autumn 2023 legislative session, politicians introduced two proposals in the New York State Assembly and Senate to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. However, both bills stayed in committee and were not voted on. Thus, neither has become law. The bill passed the Senate in March 2022, and its author, State Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, reintroduced it in March 2023 with bipartisan support. However, the House never voted on it, citing more pressing problems.
Rubio and other proponents of a permanent changeover to Daylight Saving Time have stated that the clock-changing practice is outdated. They argue that “locking the clock” in Daylight Saving Time will improve sleep for everyone, especially young parents because babies’ internal clocks do not shift. Many others argue that turning back the clocks an hour in the fall deprives us of valuable sunlight during the darkest season of the year, making winter days even shorter at a time when depression and anxiety are at their greatest. Some argue that implementing permanent Daylight Saving Time will benefit the agricultural industry.
