Shocking Florida Jury Delivers $310 Million Verdict to Family of Teen Tragically Killed in Ride Horror
In a landmark decision, a Florida jury has awarded $310 million (Rs 2,624 crore) to the family of Tyre Sampson, a 14-year-old who tragically died after falling from the Free Fall Tower ride at Orlando’s ICON Park in 2022.
Tyre, who was visiting the park on a spring break trip with his football team, fell 70 feet to his death, sparking widespread outrage and calls for greater safety measures in amusement parks. The massive award was granted to Tyre’s parents, Nekia Dodd and Yarnell Sampson, who will each receive $155 million (Rs 1,312 crore).
The jury found Funtime, the Austrian manufacturer of the ride, responsible for the tragedy. Attorneys for Tyre’s parents stated, “Tyre’s death was the result of blatant negligence and a failure to prioritize safety over profits. The ride’s manufacturers neglected their duty to protect passengers, and today’s outcome ensures they face the consequences of those decisions.”
The trial was unusually brief, lasting just a single day, as Funtime did not appear in court to defend itself. While the family had previously reached an undisclosed settlement with ICON Park, pursuing the $310 million damages from Funtime presents a significant challenge. The company, based in Austria, may require the family to seek a court order in an Austrian jurisdiction to enforce the judgment.
This case has underscored the need for stricter safety protocols in amusement parks worldwide and highlights the devastating consequences of negligence in high-risk attractions.
