The U.S. Border Patrol said that a Venezuelan national who is allegedly a part of the global gang that is causing chaos in communities throughout the country was taken into custody in Palm Beach. Assuring residents of Palm Beaches that “our agents continue to keep our communities safe,” the agency’s Chief Patrol Agent in the Miami region shared a mugshot of the person on Tuesday along with an explanation that they had been placed under arrest.
The post simply identified the person as a member of Tren de Aragua without providing his identity or the reason for his arrest. The agent said the individual has a criminal history for assault with a lethal weapon, but that information was not made public. According to a review of Palm Beach County jail records, the man was Miguel Moreno Contrera, who was charged with aggravated violence with a deadly weapon just after midnight on March 2. Less than 14 hours after his booking, Moreno Contrera was freed on a $7,500 bond.
It was unclear from the agent’s post whether the Border Patrol arrest was connected to this incident or if he was charged with a new offense. The 19-year-old was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
A DHS spokeswoman stated, “This was a targeted apprehension of a known Tren de Aragua member.” According to a DHS official, “a known member of Tren de Aragua was targeted for apprehension.” We will take the necessary steps in accordance with the purpose of safeguarding the homeland whenever our U.S. Border Patrol agents come across anyone who could endanger public safety or national security, or when fresh information emerges after ongoing screening. In the past, DHS has issued warnings that Tren de Aragua operates in at least 16 states.
These violent criminals are frequently released because the United States is unable to screen them or any immigration from nations like Venezuela, which lacks a government with whom it cooperates.
