David Ziesel, a 45-year-old man with a criminal history, admitted to covering his face before entering the iTHINK Financial bank. Armed only with an empty pillowcase, he reportedly shouted, “This is a robbery!” upon entering the premises. Authorities revealed that Ziesel was no stranger to such crimes, as he had already been convicted of two previous bank robberies.

On January 25, after the attempted heist, Ziesel tried to make a quick getaway in a gray Mazda. His escape, however, escalated into a high-speed chase involving police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and state troopers across Florida, as law enforcement pursued him in an effort to bring the repeat offender to justice.

The FBI’s Miami office later discovered that David Ziesel, a resident of Port St. Lucie, was already on probation for a 2019 bank robbery in Ohio at the time of the incident. Following the robbery at iTHINK Financial, Ziesel recklessly sped through Florida, driving from Fellsmere to Fort Pierce. The high-speed chase began on North Broadway Street, continued along Interstate 95, and ultimately came to a crashing halt at the intersection of South 13th Street and Georgia Avenue.

Authorities reported that Ziesel admitted to carrying out the robbery at iTHINK Financial. The case involved a coordinated effort between multiple agencies, including FBI Miami, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Fellsmere Police Department, and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Recently, a federal judge handed down a sentence of 15 years in prison, bringing Ziesel’s crime spree to an end.

David Ziesel was ultimately apprehended after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that began on Interstate 95 and continued south into Fort Pierce, where he crashed into another vehicle. According to reports from the time, the incident began shortly after 10 a.m. when Fellsmere police and Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to a robbery at the iTHINK Financial bank located on North Broadway Street.

Bank employees informed officers that the suspect, Ziesel, had not displayed any weapon during the robbery, and no one inside the bank was harmed. However, Ziesel had entered the bank with a pillowcase in hand and demanded that cash be placed inside it. After securing an undisclosed amount of money, he quickly fled the scene, triggering a law enforcement pursuit that ended in his capture following the crash.

The suspect, later identified as David Ziesel, fled the scene of the robbery in a gray Mazda. Indian River County sheriff’s deputies quickly located his vehicle heading southbound on Interstate 95 and initiated a pursuit. As Ziesel continued to flee at high speeds, the chase crossed into St. Lucie County, where deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol joined the effort to apprehend him.

The pursuit came to a dramatic end in Fort Pierce when Ziesel crashed his vehicle near the intersection of South 13th Street and Georgia Avenue. Following the crash, investigators searched the scene and successfully recovered the money stolen from the iTHINK Financial bank.

At the time of the incident, Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry revealed that David Ziesel was already on federal probation for a previous bank robbery committed in Ohio in 2019. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the robbery in Fellsmere was not an isolated event but marked the third time Ziesel had been convicted of bank robbery, further solidifying his pattern of repeat offenses.
