On Friday afternoon, Miami-Dade jurors announced their verdicts in the resentencing trial of two men convicted in a notorious double murder case that inspired the 2013 film Pain & Gain. Noel Doorbal and Daniel Lugo, the two defendants, were present in court together as the jury delivered its decisions.

The high-profile case, rooted in the brutal killings of a Miami couple, has long been a focus of public and legal scrutiny due to its shocking details and the cultural attention it received following its adaptation into a Hollywood movie. The verdicts mark a significant moment in the ongoing legal proceedings, bringing renewed attention to the case that has deeply impacted the victims’ families and the community.

The jury concluded that both Daniel Lugo and Noel Doorbal should avoid the death penalty and instead serve life sentences without the possibility of parole. Following the jury’s recommendation, the judge formally imposed the sentences, bringing the resentencing trial to a close.

In Lugo’s case, the jury unanimously agreed with three out of the six aggravating factors presented by the prosecution, while Doorbal’s jury found two of the six factors to be applicable. These decisions came nearly three decades after the crimes that originally placed both men on death row.

Lugo and Doorbal, both bodybuilders and members of the infamous “Sun Gym Gang” based in Miami Lakes, were convicted of the kidnapping and brutal murders of Kristina Furton and Frank Griga. The case shocked the community with its gruesome details and the perpetrators’ calculated cruelty. The crimes not only led to their initial death sentences but also became the basis for the 2013 film Pain & Gain, keeping the horrifying events in the public eye for years.

The victims were injected with horse tranquilizers, and Griga was brutally beaten. Their bodies were discovered stuffed into barrels.

The initial death sentences handed down to Daniel Lugo and Noel Doorbal were later overturned, prompting the need for a resentencing trial. This legal development provided the court with an opportunity to reassess the punishment for the two men, who had been convicted of heinous crimes nearly three decades ago. The resentencing process aimed to ensure that the penalties imposed were in line with the latest judicial standards, ultimately allowing jurors to weigh the gravity of the case once more and determine appropriate sentences for the convicted killers.
