Beloved Action News Jax Anchor Tragically Passes Away After Brave Cancer Battle

Mark Spain, a crucial anchor in our newsroom and the community, passed away, and ABC13 acknowledges his passing with great grief. Following a fight with pancreatic cancer, Mark passed away on Wednesday, December 18.

He died at the age of 64. He was born on May 25, 1960. His family, our team at WSET, and the thousands of people who welcomed Mark into their homes every night on TV were all familiar with his grin and positive outlook.

Despite the difficult circumstances, he echoed that well-known optimistic perspective when he initially spoke to the community about his cancer diagnosis in early December.

He was not alone in his fight against cancer. Mark’s cherished family was the dearest to him; he left behind his wife, Lynita, and three children, two daughters and a son, when he passed away. In her announcement of her husband’s death, Lynita emphasized the love he brought into the world.

“Our family along with the city of Lynchburg lost a man of hope, someone who loves his city and stood for equality, treating others with respect and kindness,” she continued.

“He was a good influence in the community and a spouse, father, brother, and friend. My first real love. Everyone who knew him will miss him terribly because he filled our lives with so much love, strength, compassion, and joy.
