Lake Charles Winter Weather Alert: Freezing Rain and Flood Risk to Impact Louisiana Through Thursday

17

Lake Charles, LA –  A powerful coastal cyclone is expected to bring freezing rain and heavy rain to areas of Louisiana beginning Wednesday night. The National Weather Service says regions along and north of a line between Jasper and Alexandria will have the highest potential for freezing precipitation.

A rare winter storm system is bringing freezing rain, icy roads, and a heightened flood risk to southwest Louisiana, with Lake Charles at the center of the action. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions and possible localized flooding as this icy, rainy mix continues through Thursday.

Lake Charles Winter Weather

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain can collect up to 0.01 inches in some regions, resulting in dangerous driving conditions. Motorists should be cautious, especially on I-10 and adjoining roadways, as damp conditions may become slippery surfaces. Furthermore, significant rainfall may cause localized flash floods along coastal and low-lying areas, including Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

Showers are predicted to develop Thursday afternoon and continue throughout the evening, with heavy rains possible overnight. Rain chances continue around 100% Thursday night, with totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches forecast. Residents in flood-prone locations should clean drainage areas and keep watchful. Temperatures will fall after the system passes, with daytime highs around 49°F on Wednesday and nighttime lows of 32°F. The chilly weather will likely last throughout Friday, with lingering light showers. Sunshine is expected to return on Saturday, with high temperatures approaching 49°F. Check the National Weather Service or your local emergency alert system for the most recent information on road conditions and weather warnings.

How to Stay Safe:

  1. Limit Travel: Stay off the roads if possible, especially during freezing rain.
  2. Drive Cautiously: If you must travel, slow down, and avoid sudden stops or turns on icy or wet roads.
  3. Prepare for Power Outages: Charge devices, stock up on batteries, and have blankets ready to stay warm.
  4. Flood Precautions: Avoid driving through flooded streets—just a few inches of water can stall your vehicle or sweep it away.

What to Expect:

  • Freezing Rain: A glaze of ice could form on roads, bridges, and overpasses, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.
  • Flood Risk: Persistent rain will add to water levels, increasing the chance of street and low-lying area flooding.
  • Rain Totals: Up to 2 inches of rain expected, with higher amounts in areas where rainbands stall.
