IRS Announces Big Changes for 2025 Tax Season – Don’t Miss Out!

Taxpayers, get ready! The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the 2025 tax season will officially begin on Monday, January 27. This means you can start filing your 2024 tax returns from this date, with the filing deadline set for April 15, 2025. The IRS expects to process over 140 million individual tax returns this season, and they’ve introduced several exciting updates to make filing easier and faster than ever before.

Free Filing Options Expand Nationwide

Good news for taxpayers looking to file for free: the IRS is expanding its Direct File program. Initially piloted in 12 states, the program will now be available in 25 states. This service allows eligible taxpayers to file their returns directly with the IRS at no cost.

In addition, the IRS Free File program is back and better than ever. If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $84,000 or less, you can use this service to file your taxes for free with partner software providers. This tool is user-friendly, guiding taxpayers step-by-step to ensure their returns are accurate.

What’s New for 2025

The IRS has made some big changes this year, focusing on improved technology and accessibility:

  • Faster Customer Service: Average wait times for assistance are expected to stay under five minutes.
  • More Convenient Hours: Taxpayer Assistance Centers will offer an additional 10,000 extended hours nationwide to accommodate busy schedules.
  • Mobile-Friendly Forms: Sixty-seven tax forms can now be filed using your smartphone or tablet.
  • Online Account Upgrades: Taxpayers can use their Individual Online Account to view tax return details, request an Identity Protection PIN, or manage payments more efficiently.

Refunds: Quick and Easy

If you’re filing electronically, the IRS aims to process most refunds within 21 days. You can check the status of your refund through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website, which updates just 24 hours after you file. If you’re filing on paper, refund status updates take a bit longer—around four weeks.

Maximize Your Tax Benefits

The IRS is urging taxpayers to take advantage of credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is often overlooked. Nearly 20% of eligible taxpayers don’t claim this credit, missing out on money they deserve. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, the IRS has resources available to help you figure it out.

Beware of Tax Scams

As tax season approaches, scams tend to rise. Be cautious of emails or calls claiming to be from the IRS, especially those that demand immediate payment or promise large refunds. For tips on spotting scams, visit IRS.gov and search for “tax scams.”

Plan Ahead for a Smooth Filing Season

With new tools, expanded services, and faster support, the IRS is making the 2025 tax season more accessible for everyone. Mark January 27 on your calendar, gather your documents early, and take advantage of the resources available to ensure a stress-free tax filing experience.
