A person in Georgia has died from hypothermia as a powerful winter storm continues to sweep through the South, bringing freezing temperatures and snowfall to regions unaccustomed to such extreme weather. Chris Stallings, the state’s emergency management director, confirmed the fatality, noting that the individual, a critical needs patient, had ventured outside. However, further details about the incident were not provided.

Middle GeorgiaGeorgia experienced wind chill temperatures as low as 16 degrees overnight, according to the National Weather Service. In the Atlanta area, the wind chill plummeted to a frigid minus 11 degrees around 4 a.m. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, snow from the rare winter storm is expected to linger, creating hazardous conditions for drivers, warned Collin M. Arnold, director of the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

“We’re concerned about the next two days,” Arnold said during a news briefing, as wind chill values in New Orleans are forecasted to drop to 12 degrees tomorrow. The city has already seen about 6 inches of snowfall, Arnold added, and with temperatures remaining below freezing, the snow is expected to turn into ice, making roadways even more dangerous.

New Orleans Public Schools announced that all schools will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday due to the ongoing severe weather conditions. Residents have been urged to exercise caution as the South braces for more challenges in the aftermath of this unusual and dangerous winter storm.
