Ancient Statue Found Abandoned Near Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, AP – A marble statue of a woman, believed to be over 2,000 years old, was discovered abandoned in a garbage bag near the Greek city of Thessaloniki, police reported on Wednesday.

The 80-centimeter (31-inch) headless statue was found by a local resident near a trash bin in Neoi Epivates, a suburb of Greece’s second-largest city. The individual promptly handed the artifact over to local authorities, who then contacted archaeologists for further examination.

Preliminary evaluations by experts suggest the statue dates back to the Hellenistic era, a period spanning roughly from 320 to 30 B.C., known for its significant artistic and cultural achievements following Alexander the Great’s conquests.

Authorities are investigating how such a valuable artifact ended up discarded, as its historical importance continues to be assessed.
