Leon public schools to remain closed Thursday for wintry weather
Leon County students and instructors will receive a second snow day this week, as the district expects to remain off Thursday due to the snowy weather on Wednesday. All after-school activities are also cancelled. “All LCS schools and district offices will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025 due to anticipated icy road conditions tomorrow morning,” the district stated in a text message to parents Wednesday afternoon. With ice roads still providing a risk to drivers and few formal road restrictions, the school system intends to reopen Friday.
Maclay School, located on North Meridian Road, will also be closed Thursday as safety conditions are monitored for a possible reopening on Friday. Florida State University’s K-12 charter school and Florida A&M’s Developmental Research School will be closed on Thursday and expected to reopen Friday. Leon County Schools closed for a snow day on Wednesday, minimizing the possibility of parents having to drive children or buses running their routes on ice roads. However, Thursday could bring comparable icy conditions, posing the same concern. Will school be open?
The district expected to reopen Thursday, but if the roads remain unsafe, they may not. “When we have a decision, we’ll push it out,” district spokeswoman Chris Petley told the Tallahassee Democrat Wednesday morning. As of lunchtime, Tallahassee was covered in an average of 2 inches of snow and ice, with some neighborhoods facing power outages and hazardous driving conditions owing to freezing temperatures. Tallahassee police asked residents to avoid local roadways.
Tallahassee is forecast to be cloudy with a high of 43 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, but not until late afternoon. The biggest challenge, according to the National Weather Service, is that “Tallahassee remains under a Winter Storm Warning.” The temperature is expected to rise just above freezing today before dropping again overnight. This will thaw and refreeze much of the precipitation now on the ground.”
