Man Identified in Fatal Pompano Beach Crash as Alleged Driver Faces Multiple Charges
Authorities have identified the man who died in a Pompano Beach crash last year as William Windhurst, 76, while prosecutors revealed the alleged driver’s extensive history of speeding violations.
Angelo Michael Ragonese, 49, was arrested on Monday in connection with the September 17, 2024 crash that claimed Windhurst’s life. Ragonese faces 10 charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI with damage to property or another person, reckless driving, child abuse, and child neglect, according to Broward County jail records.
During a court appearance on Tuesday, prosecutors outlined Ragonese’s long history of speeding offenses. In 2012, he was convicted twice for driving 74 mph and 99 mph in a 65 mph zone. In 2013, he faced three more speeding convictions, followed by two in 2019.
Details of the Fatal Crash
The fatal crash occurred around 9:20 a.m. on September 17, 2024, at the intersection of E. Atlantic Boulevard and Northeast 15th Avenue.
According to the arrest affidavit, Ragonese was driving a 2022 BMW M4 coupe with his juvenile son as a passenger when the vehicle collided with a Toyota Camry.
The affidavit states that the BMW T-boned the Toyota as it was making a turn, causing the Toyota to rotate and slide off the roadway before crashing into a nearby bank.
Ragonese’s actions on that day, combined with his history of reckless driving, have raised serious concerns about the role of speeding and impaired driving in fatal crashes. Windhurst’s death is a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of such actions.
The case is ongoing, and further updates are expected as the legal proceedings unfold.
