Meryl Streep, the Oscar-winning actress from Hollywood, will be presented with the honorary Palme d’Or Award during the 77th Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony. The actress has also been invited as a Guest of Honor to the event, which is scheduled to take place on May 14 at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in France, according to a statement released by the festival. Thirty-five years after winning the Best Actress Oscar for A Cry in the Dark in 1989, this will be her first trip to Cannes.

The Cannes Film Festival’s 2024 edition will begin on May 14 and run until May 25. In addition to a host of well-known Hollywood icons that will be included in the next edition, George Lucas will also be awarded the Palme d’Or at the ceremony’s conclusion.

Meryl Streep Considers It an “Honor” to Have Been Selected for the prestigious Award

The Devil Wears Prada actress will present the honours list at Cannes 2024, which will be presented by Greta Gerwig, President of the Jury.

Meryl Streep spoke candidly after winning the coveted Cannes award, describing herself as “thrilled” and “immeasurable honour” and that she was eager to thank everyone in person.

“I am immeasurably honoured to receive the news of this prestigious award. To win a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking. To stand in the shadow of those who have previously been honoured is humbling and thrilling in equal part. I look forward to coming to France to thank everyone in person this May!” she said in a statement.

The festival organisers also acknowledged the actress’ outstanding contribution to cinema and said, “We all have something in us of Meryl Streep like Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Out of Africa, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia! Because she has spanned almost 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema.”

The 74-year-old Academy Award winner, who has had 21 nominations and three Oscars, is among the most renowned in Hollywood history. Throughout her five-decade career, she has acted in dramas, family favourites, and modern classics.
