MIAMI-DADE, FLORIDA – Over the weekend, a number of swatting instances caused operational disruptions at many shopping centers in South Florida.Threats at malls throughout the counties of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach prompted law enforcement agencies to take action.
Dadeland Mall in Miami-Dade was put under lockdown when police received a swatting call.The bomb squad was sent in to look into the situation. Customers and staff could feel safe at the mall, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department, which also verified that there were no credible threats.Sawgrass Mills Mall in Broward County was also impacted by a swatting event.
Several complaints of violence
Despite the lack of information of an active shooter, law enforcement officers showed up as a precaution.There were no evacuations and the mall stayed open. A more significant event happened in Palm Beach County when a threat forced the evacuation of the Town Center in Boca Raton.
Police said that a caller from the mall’s north parking lot made a fictitious complaint of violence. Celebrity gamer Cody Conrad, also referred to as Clixa online, acknowledged that he had been the victim of the swatting incident. Incidents of “switching” are malevolent jokes that fabricate stories of violent crimes.
