Woman who went missing during hike in Campo found after two days
A 50-year-old woman reported missing during a nearly two-day hike in the backcountry has been reunited with her family after being rescued Sunday by sheriff’s volunteers and a sheriff’s helicopter, authorities confirmed.
According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Office, the woman’s family informed deputies on Saturday afternoon that they had not heard from her since she texted around 8:30 a.m. Friday, saying she was about to start a hike near the Lake Morena campground in Campo.
San Diego Parks and Recreation personnel alerted deputies that she missed her checkout time at her cabin near Lake Morena, where her belongings were still left behind.
The search for the woman involved approximately 30 volunteers from the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit and support from a sheriff’s helicopter. The U.S. Border Patrol’s Search, Trauma, and Rescue Unit also joined the effort, deploying two team members and a search and rescue dog to assist in locating her.
