Armed man dies after being shot by Akron officer on Thanksgiving night
After hearing gunshots on Thanksgiving night, an Akron police officer shot and killed an armed man, according to authorities. According to a police press release, two patrol officers were working on a report from an unconnected incident in the Sherbondy Hill area while parked in a police cruiser. Just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, they heard gunshots nearby and went outside to look into it, according to the police.
According to authorities, the officers soon came upon a man brandishing a loaded gun. The individual was hit by one of the police’ bullets, given first assistance, and transported to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. According to police, the fired officer, who had been with the department for almost five years, and his partner were put on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental procedure.
Before sending the report to a Summit County grand jury for consideration, the state attorney general’s office will examine the findings of the investigation conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Additionally, Akron police will conduct an independent internal inquiry and report the findings to the city’s police auditor and police chief.
