Michigan nickelback Mike Sainristil has emerged as a top prospect with a standout performance during the evaluating season leading up to the NFL Draft in Detroit on April 25. 

Sainristil impressed with a blazing 4.47 40-yard-dash time at the 2024 NFL Combine, highlighting his exceptional straight-line speed that solidified his reputation as one of the top defensive playmakers in the nation last season.

On Friday, Sainristil was in a cheerful mood as he responded to a post from a Detroit-based sports media network on X, mentioning former Michigan teammate and current Detroit Lions edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson.

Sainristil was identified as a potential addition to the Lions’ 2024 secondary, and the former Michigan DB appeared enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the NFL team representing the Great Lakes State.

Hutchinson’s exceptional performance on the field earned him the prestigious title of Consensus All-American for the Wolverines in 2021. 

He ended up as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, with Alabama QB Bryce Young taking the top spot. He also made it as a finalist for the Maxwell Award that season.

Following his selection as the second overall pick by the Lions, Hutchinson earned the prestigious title of Pepsi’s Rookie of the Year in 2022. He continued to excel in 2023, securing his first Pro Bowl appearance and leading the Lions to their first division title since 1993.

The Lions secondary could benefit from some reinforcement following the departure of cornerback Cameron Sutton, who is currently facing legal issues related to a domestic battery incident in Florida. 

Sutton was seemingly present at the Lions’ practice facility in Allen Park when Lions President Rod Wood was informed of the news.

Sainristil’s Impactful Performance for Wolverines

Last season, Sainristil had an impressive performance for the Wolverines, with 26 solo tackles, six interceptions, and six pass break-ups. 

He had a remarkable 81-yard interception return in the College Football Playoff national championship game against the Washington Huskies, solidifying the Wolverines’ first national title since 1997.

Sainristil’s name did not appear in the initial round of CBS Sports’ most recent 2024 NFL Mock Draft.

He is expected to be selected in the second round, potentially causing the Lions to pass on him unless they choose to trade up from their current 61st overall position in the second round.

Lions General Manager Brad Holmes previously mentioned that the Lions are not obligated to sign another cornerback this offseason.

 However, Sainristil would bring a unique element to coordinator Aaron Glenn’s defense as a fast and physical player in the nickelback position. He has the ability to deliver hard hits, make tackles, and disrupt opposing receivers when the ball is in the air.
